Winter Falcon
Winter Falcon
I connect with birds - especially raptors - for their higher perspectives and what seems to me a kind of assured awareness, and even satisfaction, in their own power and beauty. Reading the lovely novel "A Kestral for a Knave" by Barry Hines, there is a scene where a teacher from the school has come round to see a troubled boy who has secretly found and trained a kestral hawk. Watching the hawk in action, they find communion around it, and there's a line that goes, "It seems to look you straight in the eye and say, 'Who the hell are you anyway?' It reminds me of the poem by Lawrence, 'If men were as much men as lizards are lizards, they'd be worth looking at.'" That really resonated with me. I read that line again and again. "...they'd be worth looking at." Wow.
For the winter edition of my Four Seasons Project (See Spring Peony, Summer Lotus, and Autumn Moon Festival), I wanted to capture that elegant self-assurance. A falcon is unbothered by the changing seasons. Its supreme authenticity and prowess mean that it greets each day with equanimity, and total confidence.
